This is the story of one voyage of a Fortune Class vessel carrying a full load of lumber from ports on Vancouver Island to Japan. The ship was the m.v. Athol. The vessel was chartered to the Canadian Transport Company (CTCo), a Division of MacMillan Bloedel.
A Fortune class vessel: these ships were easily identified by their unusual high mount 10 tonne derricks. They were designed in collaboration with the Canadian designers Algonquin International of Montreal.
The International Sailor’s Society of Canada (ISSC) are now inviting applications for their 2026 Sue Hanby Maritime Education Bursaries. Anyone enrolled in maritime related courses who are aiming for a career at sea may apply.

The NPESC is pleased to announce that under the direction of the Vancouver Transportation Foundation (VTF) they are administering the award of a Marine Transportaion scholarship to a succesful applicant from the BCIT Marine Trainning Campus. Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Sue Hanby Maritime Bursaries which are to provide financial assistance to those enrolled in marine related courses at schools within Canada and looking to make a career at sea.
With 2024 coming to a close, the CMCF would like to express its thanks for your support throughout the year. As we look back on the marine sector’s achievements this past year, we’re grateful for the many contributions made towards our shared mission to build a diverse, inclusive and future-ready workforce.
