Join us for our Annual General Meeting
In order to bring our AGM in-line with that of the BC Branch of The Nautical Institute, the NPESC will be holding its 2015 AGM in conjunction with the NIBC on Saturday May 14th at The Vancouver Maritime Museum.
The meeting will take place at 11:00 hours and members and other interested parties are encouraged to join us and hear about our fund raising efforts along with news about the bursaries that we have given out thus far, this year.
For those interested in joining our Society your annual membership fee of C$40.00 will receive a tax deductible receipt and will help us in pursuing our goal of furthering the professional education of Canadian mariners. For your convenience, receipts will be provided at the meeting.
RCN to commemorate Battle of the Atlantic
On Sunday, May 1, 2016, Canadians from across the country will gather to commemorate the sacrifices made by the thousands of Canadians who fought so valiantly during the Battle of the Atlantic, which ran from 1939 to 1945.
The national ceremony will be held at Parliament Hill at 11 a.m. and will include Canadian Armed Forces members from the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), alongside members of the Merchant Navy (MN). They will be accompanied by Central Region Sea and Air Cadets, Navy League Cadets, the Royal Canadian Legion Colour Party, local veteran organizations, other government departments, the diplomatic community, and the Ottawa Children’s Choir.
Each year, on the first Sunday in May, Canada and its naval community commemorate those lost at sea in the longest single campaign of the Second World War. Today, the legacy of the Battle of the Atlantic is upheld by those currently serving in the RCN, pledging themselves as “Ready, Aye, Ready” to defend Canada and to uphold its ideals around the world.
2015 First Year Achievement Bursary Awarded
BCIT Marine Engineering Cadet Andrew Lehman was the recipient of the First Year Achievement bursary for 2015 and was presented with his award at a ceremony held at the North Vancouver Marine Campus of BCIT on Monday afternoon.
An endowment was established in 1999 with matching funds from the Government of British Columbia. The annual interest is awarded to a student in the Marine Engineering or Nautical Sciences programs of BCIT.
The program instructors at the Marine Campus select the recipient of this award based upon the student’s performance after the first year of the course.
The award alternates between the Nautical Science and the Marine Engineering students. In “even numbered” years a Nautical Science student is eligible. A Marine Engineering student is eligible in “odd numbered” years.
The endowment with the BCIT Foundation generates insufficient income at this time to provide an award worth $1,000. So, the Society issues its own cheque to cover the balance.
2016 Bursary Applications
Applications for our 2016 bursary awards are now being accepted.
This year there will be a total of 5 bursaries, each worth C$1,000, awarded to applicants enrolled in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering courses of a minimum length of 250 hours at a training institution approved by Transport Canada and registered with the British Columbia government.
Four of these bursaries are made possible by a generous contribution from the BC Supercargoes Association
